Competitors of Game Boy
Published by Alexis Jhon Gaspar,
Hi,guys, I viewing some of Nintendo Game Boy's competitors and how the compete. Some of them are currently on verification, and some are opinions of myself.
Overview
Back in the 70's, the concept of interchangeable cartridges in a handheld is thought by some developers. In 1980, Gunpei Yokoi, The master of handheld design at Nintendo, which they only have Color TV Game and arcade games back then, created a masterpiece called Game & Watch, not confused on Game Watches. As the name implies, It integrated a clock and unchangeable games. Some popular games are Donkey Kong, which it shows the first D-pad. Others are Zelda, Mario Bros., Ball and Donkey Kong Jr. In 1989, a concept of handheld NES was created, and called Game Boy. It continued for 2 decades with Color and Advance models created in 1998 and 2001. If you on Japan, there's Game Boy Light, the first backlight Game Boy. There's competitors over it's years, such as Game Gear,Lynx,Neo Geo Pocket, WonderSwan, N-Gage(the weird taco phone), and even more innovative at Advance time, PSP.
So let's talk about it!
OH YEAH * OH YEAH * OH YEAH * OH YEAH *
Lynx
Atari's attempt to handheld market was pretty good but this handheld is playable at both landscape and portrait mode. It's 8 and 16 bit, maybe but it have backlight and color screen unlike Game Boy. It's games was great but the Tetris phenomenon, it's the downfall of Lynx.
Game Gear and Nomad
The Game Gear was Sega's attempt, and it's like a portable Master System, as it have a add-on to play it on the handheld and a TV Tuner which might shorten the battery life of few hours, which Game Boy have much longer play time. It have a color screen and backlight too, it have a game that almost compete Tetris, it's Columns. Sonic ports are flawless and some games are great but again, due to Tetris phenomenon, it failed. But Sega tried again with the Nomad, the portable Genesis, with no own games. It failed too,So you lucky if you play Genesis on the go.
Neo Geo Pocket
SNK was good on arcade on their Neo Geo MVC(?) system that helped the arcade to replace their games and their games such as King of Fighters and Fatal Fury. Once in 1999, Neo Geo Pocket brings the arcade feeling on their "clickystick". Due to low sales, they improved the screen by adding color on it. There are lots of good games such as Sonic Pocket Adventure or King of Fighters R or even the SNK vs Capcom which you can connect it on a Dreamcast, like the GBA hooked up on a Game Boy Player on GameCube. Due to bankruptcy and competition, the system was discontinued in 2001.
